House of Chintz

House of Chintz is the design label of Kate Boyce. She studied Surface Pattern at Staffordshire University and then spent several years designing fabric and giftware for industry.

Then came a change – she moved to the country, got married and had two lovely daughters. She could never give up working, but wanted to move away from stringent briefs and ‘chintzy’ floral designs. And so motivated by her surroundings, she began creating and selling mixed-media paintings on canvas. This venture thankfully proved successful and she was able to work at home whist bringing up her daughters.

After a while, she found herself strangely drawn back to the chintz. The pattern began appearing in her paintings. She often arrives at initial ideas by playing about with images on the computer. Once, she realized that rather than being an idea for a painting, she had an idea for a design that was just crying out to be a lampshade! At that point, she realized that she was never going to be confined to one line of work. Thus, she divides her time between design and painting.

English landscape and pattern are her main inspirations. Her lampshades are inspired by the suburban landscape she grew up in. Her own photography and vintage floral fabric of the 70’s and 80’s are starting points for the designs. The lampshades are all handmade in her studio.

Welcome to 2011!

January 2, 2011 | by admin in press

At the start of a new year, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for reading, commenting, re-tweeting and adding to the creative conversation. As a Creative Director, the Website Bakery was born out of a desire to share the things that inspire me most and the fabulous creative people behind them. I am grateful that almost every person I have contacted throughout the year, has graciously accepted to be a part of this showcase. In my journey to study the portfolios of my favorite artists and designers, I’ve met some interesting people and made some good friends along the way. I am forever changed for knowing more about each and every one of you. I look forward to meeting even more friends in 2011!

Thank you all for coming to the Bakery. I’m honored that you have taken the time to visit me!

Website Bakery is an exhibition and inspiration showcase gallery that aggregates art, design, web design, illustration, handmade, products, etc. Curated by Kimberly Coles, Creative Director, Illustrator and Web Designer.
